Title: Working with a methodology Type: Assignment – Written Assignment Learning Outcomes Assessed: 1, 3, 4 Due Date: as per course profile Weight: 60% Marked out of: 60 Length: 2000 words plus reference list Task Description: This assessment task offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your capacity to interpret, apply and explain your understanding of a selected qualitative research methodology and associated methods in a particular educational context with which you are familiar. This task consists of two parts:
• Part A: An oral pitch that explains your choice of methodology of 5-6 minutes followed by 5 minutes of questioning and discussion involving a panel of your peers. This will be scheduled during tutorials/Collaborate sessions. Worth 20 out of 60 marks available for AT2. • Part B: A written proposal of 2,000 words. Worth 40 out of 60 marks available for AT2.
Part A: This part provides you with the opportunity to verbally explain the proposed outline, scope and plan for your research. You will respond to questions from your researcher ‘panel’ after your oral presentation. It is expected that you will take note of questions and issues raised in the discussion to refine the written proposal that follows.
Part B: This part will expand on Part A and offer a more in-depth written proposal for a qualitative approach to your research issue/question. Your essay may have headings and must provide references that support your proposal, detailing the methodology, choice of methods, and analytical approach.
Criteria & Marking:
1. Demonstrates understanding of the conceptual and theoretical framework of qualitative research; 2. Conveys depth and complexity of knowledge of the chosen methodology; 3. Shows understanding of implications and processes for methods that are suitable for application in a research context where the chosen methodology is applied; 4. Demonstrates skill in making explicit the connections between the methodology, methods, analytical process and underlying assumptions; and 5. Demonstrates academic and English literacy.
