The world’s largest cigarette company, Philip Morris, donates millions of dollars to museums,Sample Page theaters, dance companies, and arts groups in New York City, where its corporate headquarters are located. When the city was about to enact tough smoking restrictions, Philip Morris reportedly contacted the various groups and let them know that future grants would be affected by the level of support they received in their fight against the city. Many of the groups joined the lobbying effort and barraged city hall with calls and letters opposing the smoking restrictions. Editorials in the Chronicle of Philanthropy and elsewhere criticized Philip Morris for its pressure tactics.5
