Introduction
Nurses have personal philosophies that can change over the length of their careers. It plays an important part in who they are as a healthcare professional through their beliefs, ethics, morals and values. It can motivate a nurse and be the defining factor of why they decided to join a profession devoted to caring for others during a vulnerable time. I feel as though being a nurse is being committed to your patients and providing safe care that is both efficient and conducive to their health. Care should be delivered judgement free regardless of race, sex, culture or creed. My philosophy includes being an advocate for my patients while maintaining integrity, compassion and accountability. My education has helped mold and instill these values into the nurse I am today. It has taught me that although I had these characteristics before I started my career, it is important to carry them on my back daily in order to be the best medical professional I can be for my patients.
Assumptions
The healthcare profession is not for everyone, you have to feel called to it and enjoy being a source of help to others. When deciding to become a nurse, you are deciding everyday to put others needs before your own. Working with a sick population can be stressful and not every patient is appreciative of our services, but we still have to do our work with a smile on our faces regardless. Our job is to make them comfortable and help them back to optimal health so they can go back to living their daily lives normally. We set the tone for the work environment and how a patient feels while in our care, if they can sense we are unhappy it creates an uncomfortable and hostile environment which is not beneficial to the patient.
This is where nursing philosophy comes into play. Without it nurses would not display compassion or stay true to ethics, values and morals. These traits are effective when interacting with families and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. By remembering why, I am a nurse and the values that helped me gain my title, I am able to comfort a mother when her child is sick. I can stand there and hold their hands when they are sad or answer questions in a compassionate way to provide them some ease. When speaking with other members of the healthcare team I can keep in mind that my patient is the most important part of the equation. Advocating for each individual is always the number one priority, and its important to remind other healthcare professionals of this because the person and their feelings can be forgotten. Nurses need to remember we are all on the same team and fighting for the same outcome, our patients to be discharged back home to their loved ones. We need to continuously rely on each other and share the same concern for our patients in order to succeed in our jobs. Communication within the healthcare team can be beneficial and display the professionalism needed to deliver effective care. I hope that my philosophy is seen and observed by others in the way I work and can be a light to those around me. Working in this profession we need to be able to count on one another and when there is a positive attitude in play, there is no way we cannot succeed together by delivering safe and patient-centered care.

Katelyn you are on the right track and stated your philosophy of nursing. You need to take the assumptions section however and relate your philosphy specifically to each of the assumptions, patient, nurse, health, and environment. You also need to add the ethical considerations sections.
Again see the template in the back of the change proposal for assistance and assistance with heading placement. Your paper is attached with comments/ |
