EXTRA INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
Open-ended analysis of geostructures
Due date & time for electronic submission of individual report via Turnitin: 2 June 2023 5:00pm
Rate effects on the shear strength of soft clays (10/100)
This final part is for postgraduate students only, enrolled in the 6000 version of the course. It is a higher level
task, devised to encourage you to search the contemporary literature to find answers to practical
(geotechnical) engineering problems.
You should be already familiar with the chart shown in Fig. 1. It comes from the standard ASTM D 2573 and
presents values of the factor
μR used to correct vane shear measurements for rate effects, by considering
the time to failure of the structure to be designed, and the plasticity index of the tested soil.
Figure 3. Proposed correction factor to raw field vane shear data from Plasticity Index (after Chandler,
1998)
Can you find any more recent data from the literature that support (or challenge) the correction factor values
shown in Fig. 1? Your search can be focused (but not necessarily be limited to) marine clays.
Present in a short paper (no longer that 1.5-2 pages long, using Times New Roman font size 12 or equivalent,
and standard margins):
1) A comparison of the data you will find from the literature and those shown in Fig. 1 above (make good
use of figures where appropriate)
2) A relevant discussion
3) Your conclusions regarding the relevance of the rate correction method used in current vane shear
testing standards
