To be used for all types of assessment and provided to students at the start of the module.

Information provided should be compatible with the detail contained in the approved module specification although may contain more information for clarity.

Assessment task details and instructions

TASK

Select two questions from the following four and write a short essay of approx. 1500 words for each answer (i.e. a total of 3,000 words, not including the final reference list).

 

Q1. Many careers develop in more of a ‘planned happenstance’ than strategically crafted way according to Mitchell, Levinn & Krumboltz (1999). Discuss this perspective, highlighting what employees wishing to progress an international career might do to achieve this (50 marks) and what HR departments in large organisations might do to support such career ambitions (50 marks)

 

 

Q2. Training and development are high-cost activities, but with a potentially high return. Discuss what companies should consider when designing an employee development programme (50 marks) and how they might maximise the return on their investment (50 marks)

 

 

Q3. What factors should companies operating across both developed and emerging economies consider in designing a pay and reward process (100 marks)

 

 

Q4. Discuss how globalisation and the presence of institutional fields impact the way in which HRM operates within multi/transnational companies (100 marks).

Assessment Criteria You should look at the assessment criteria and marks scheme set out above.
Knowledge and Understanding

Evaluate, critique and discuss the variety of cultural norms, behaviours and paradigms in organisation design and development and their value and contribution to organisational life from both historical and contemporary perspectives;

Apply theoretical ideas to help solve problems around organisational design and development including the reference to the way that processes and systems maintain those structures;

Understand and critically evaluate the methods and procedures of organisational development which support organisational design and realignment strategies;

Review research and critically evaluate major debates related to HRM and HRD in organisations in a national and global context including the way that organisational HRM and HRD strategies are shaped by and developed in response to internal and external environmental factors by a variety of factors including through government policy;

With reference to demographic, social and technological trends, demonstrate a sound understanding of globalised HRM and HRD policy and practice and the issues facing international HR managers in a global business environment including the critical evaluation of how organisational leaders and the HR function respond to these pressures.

Word count/ duration (if applicable) Your assessment should be submitted in a Word document, using an 11 or 12 point font (Arial, Calibri, Tahoma, Times new Roman) and 1.5 line spacing.

Feedback arrangements You can expect to receive your provisional mark and feedback 15 working days after submission.

In Year Retrieval Scheme Your assessment is not eligible for in year retrieval.
Reassessment If you fail your assessment, and are eligible for reassessment, you will be contacted by the PG Administrator with details, after you have received your interim results letter. For students with accepted personal mitigating circumstances for absence/non submission, this will be your replacement assessment attempt.

The reassessment task will be the same as the original task.
