OVERVIEW

This module discusses qualitative approaches used for data collection in evaluation research, including: utilizing the Internet, semi-structured interviewing, focus groups, and stories.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Describe how to use the Internet for literature reviews, conduct surveys on the Internet, and post information about evaluation studies on the Internet.

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of semi-structured interviewing, how to draft questions and record semi-structured interviews for analyzing and reporting.

Outline when and why focus groups are used, how to develop focus group questions and how to analyze and use focus group data.

Identify how stories can be used in evaluation studies, procedures, strategies, and challenges in using stories and how to avoid them, while maintaining confidentiality.

Decide on the questions you would like to answer in an evaluation of your own graduate program. Develop a strategy for gathering stories about problems that fellow students have encountered in their jobs that they were able to overcome using approaches that they learned from courses or from fellow students. Collect some stories that relate to the questions you would like to answer in an evaluation of your graduate program. Identify any common themes or patterns in the stories that you collected. Decide how you would re-tell one or more of the stories in your evaluation report.
