Assessment description
This task is related to the activity of assessment task 1 simulated workplace.
The student is to identify hazards, assess risk levels and provide treatments for the assessed
risks for a simulated workplace either “Coffeeville” or “Australian Hardware”.
Your assessor will guide you on how to access relevant workplace documents. The following
links will provide you the access to above simulated workplaces.
Assessment instructions
1. Review the simulated workplace (Australian Hardware) to undertake the project of
establishing networks for the workplace.
2. Read the WHS policy and procedure of the simulated workplace
3. Perform and complete the 15 task activities. Use the Appendix 1 and Appendix 2
tables and formats for the activities.
4. This task requires you to meet with your manager (assessor) and/or other relevant
individuals in a role-play. Form the individuals with specific roles to role-play as
agreed by your assessor.
5. Complete the following assessment task activities during the allowed assessment
date/s and time/s.
6. The assessment task is due on the date specified by your assessor.
7. Any variations to this arrangement must be approved in writing by your assessor.
8. Submit your work with any required evidence attached.
9. See the specifications above for details of submission requirements.
10. Time allowed for the assessment task is 4 hours.
Specifications to submit
You must:
1. risk identification table used relevant to the simulated workplace
2. risk analysis matrix that indicates the risk levels and categories
3. risk treatment plan using risk control measures
4. Report on any inadequacies of existing control measures and how you would
monitor outcomes on inadequacies and take prompt actions.

Performance objective
You must demonstrate skills for identifying hazards, analysing and treating risks and
maintaining WHS records of accidents and incidents in a workplace.
Assessment context
Simulated work environment. This assessment will be conducted within the training facility
in the specific training room allocated for the trainee/s during the training sessions planned
for assessment using simulated workplace scenario with the access to materials and
equipment facilitated by your assessor.
Required resources
1. Assessment task, assessment instructions and case study.
2. Computer with Internet access and word-process software (MS Word/MS Excel/or
relevant Mac software etc.).
3. Simulated workplace policies and procedures.
4. Workspace, table, chair and stationery and access to:
a. organisational WHS policies and procedures
b. WHS legislation, regulations and codes of practice
c. case studies and, where possible, real situations
Your assessor will be looking for
Evidence of the ability to:
• establish, implement, maintain and evaluate a work health and safety (WHS)
management system for a work area of an organisation in accordance with WHS
legislation including policies, procedures and record keeping
• ensure organisational WHS compliance
• establish, implement, maintain and evaluate effective and compliant participation
arrangements for managing WHS including identifying duty holders, identifying and
approving the required resources and developing and implementing a training
program
• establish, implement, maintain and evaluate procedures for effectively identifying
hazards, and assessing and controlling risks using the hierarchy of risk control
• provide information and complete documentation for a WHS management system
• identify requirements for and request expert WHS advice.

Your Task
Assume the role of a manager for the simulated workplace. Before attempting this task,
please review workplace documents to understand the workplace information and the
environment.
Note: Appendix 1 and Appendix 2 provides the tables and formats to complete the following
activities.
Complete following Activities
1. Read and review the workplace information (simulated workplace documents and
equipment) and find out the WHS policies related to the workplace. Summarise at
least 5 important guidelines items of the policy document.
2. Identify at least five areas of the WHS legislation and the requirements to be
compliant
3. Determine and design a work health and safety management system (WHSMS) for
the workplace and identify financial and human resources required by the WHS
management system (WHSMS)
4. Develop a 30 minutes session plan to communicate WHS policies and organisation’s
commitment to complying with WHS legislation to the duty holders
5. Meet with your CEO (Assessor) and other stakeholders (Fellow trainees) in a roleplay as agreed by assessor to:
a. discuss how to work with workers and their representatives to set up and
maintain participation arrangements according to relevant WHS legislation.
b. how to provide information about the outcomes of participation and
consultation to workers
c. During this role-play, discuss how to appropriately resolve issues raised
through participation and consultation arrangements and
6. Analyse the simulated workplace in terms of their business type, work activities and
stakeholder involvement and develop procedures for ongoing hazard identification,
and assessment and control of associated risks
7. Using procedures developed above, you are required to determine the work
activities carried out in day-today operation, and identify hazards of the following
categories at least one hazard of each.
a. Physical hazards
b. Psycho-social hazards
c. Biological hazards
d. Chemical hazards
e. Ergonomics hazards and
f. Environmental hazards
Note: You may use the appendix 2- tables and formats for this activity and
following three activities.

8. Assess the risks levels for each hazard should they occur.
9. Provide treatments for respective risk levels by using hierarchy of risk control.
10. Explain how you would report on inadequacies of existing control measures and how
you would monitor outcomes on inadequacies and take prompt actions
11. Determine what expert advice is required to keep the workplace safe.
12. Read the table in appendix 1 of patterns of occupational injury and disease in the
organization and record the information in a graph, then measure and evaluate the
WHSMS system to further improvement
13. Based on analysis of above incidents, make some recommendations for
improvements to the WHSMS to achieve organisational WHS objectives
14. Develop an induction program (induction checklist) for you to use for all workers in a
work area as part of the organisation’s training program
15. Identify and list WHS legal requirements that you must follow to ensure compliance
with the WHS legislative framework
