What does this essay look into?
This essay draws in the concepts, theories and practice examples on the purpose
and contribution of organisations in the community sector and what makes them
different to other forms of organisational management, such as public sector and
private sector organisations.
What is the marking criteria?
This essay will be marked according to three criteria:
Comprehension of key concepts: This is how you demonstrate an understanding
of the concepts of community organisation and management that are covered in the
unit and can express them coherently.
Critical analysis: This is how you demonstrate an ability to critique the role of
community organisations compared to other forms of organisational management. It
is also how you applies examples from community organisations that are relevant
and supports the main arguments presented in your essay.
Expression: This shows that you can express ideas clearly and coherently in written
form, using a consistent style of writing and referencing.
The rubric for the assignment’s marking criteria has been published
on the unit’s vUWS site.
Is this essay about the community sector as a whole, or do I look into a
particular community organisation?
This essay asks you to explore the community sector as a whole. Do not limit your
analysis to one or a small number of community organisations (This is the topic for a
later assignment).
That said, you may refer to the practices of a community organisation to illustrate a
point in your essay or to support an argument. If you chose to do this, use this

example as a supporting reference specific to your point, and do not provide and
excessive amount of detail on how that community organisation operates.
Must I focus on the community sector in Australia, or can I look into the
community sector outside Australia?
As this essay takes a conceptual and theoretical focus of community organisations,
you may choose to apply these concepts to the community sector inside Australia or
globally.
How many references must a use?
It is expected that you will use a minimum of five (5) references. Your reference list
must include academic references, such as the prescribed text.
You may also reference publications from or about community sector, called ‘grey
literature’. As these papers may not be peer reviewed, be careful to assess the
rigour and quality in any reports or papers that you use (so avoid blogs and opinion
pieces for example). The two reports referred to in Lecture Pod 2A (Module 2) are
examples of reports you can reference.
Must I limit myself to the course materials, or can I research beyond the
course materials?
The course materials can provide a foundation for your essay, but you are
encouraged to research beyond the materials provided in the unit. If you research
beyond the materials provided, make sure that the references you are relevant to the
arguments you are including in your essay.
Can I send my tutor a draft of my essay to review prior to submission?
You can ask questions of your tutor or the unit coordinator, but unfortunately, they

problem – the teaching team is trying to help people get through. It is important to
ask yourself here first however: “Will this help me or am I putting off a problem?”
All requests for extension must be submitted through the WesternNow portal via the

Once you log into WesternNow Home Page, select the following options:

Extension for assessments.
Once you have completed the form and uploaded the supporting documents, click on
Submit to register your request for extension.
Please note that your Tutors cannot grant an extension for assessments.
Additionally, the Unit Coordinator cannot grant an extension without the appropriate
form having been sent through the proper channels by the Student, which is then
issued via SSAP to the Unit Coordinator. Proceeding to request an extension without
following the appropriate channels will only result in a delay in you receiving a
response.
Please remember that you need to provide some evidence as to why you
need the extension and that you will still need to apply even if you already
have an Academic Integration Plan (AIP).
You must abide by the conditions surrounding an ‘Extension’ and/or ‘Special
Consideration’. This includes having to continue to work on your submission
(as much as is possible) whilst you are awaiting your response.
