You are a registered nurse working in the ACT Health- School Nurse Program in an ACT government school. You are asked by the head of student services teacher to follow up with Jacob, a year 6 student who has reportedly been flat and disengaged in class. Jacob agrees to meet with you. During your discussion with Jacob, he discloses that his mother’s partner Dean has recently moved in with them. Jacob states it is now him, his mother (Amy), Dean, and Jacob’s younger brother (Jax) living in the two bedroont home. Jacob informs you that Dean comes home drunk from the pub a few times a week. Jacob adds that his mother and Dean have been arguing constantly about Dean’s alcohol use. Jacob informs you that last week when his mother and Dean were arguing. Dean pushed her against the wall and then slapped her against the face to-shut her up”. Jacob states that his mother sustained some bruising to the back of the head and some red marks to her left cheek but did not require medical attention. During your discussion you ask Jacob some questions around potential risks to safety. Jacob denies that Dean has ever been violent or abusive to either him or Jax. Jacob adds that he is ‘ usually a pretty cool guy”.
