Discussion 2 – Art Restoartion
Hannah Schwermer posted May 6. 2019 4:34 PM * Subscribe Da Vinci’s “Last Supper”was restored in 1999, and the controversy is still being talked about today. The controversy behind the restored art is that art restorers took away the original beauty and uniqueness in da Vinci’s work. A similar situation behind Michelangelo’s “Sistine Chapel Ceiling”took place in June, 1980. Who the artist is after the restoration is also up for debate. I believe the artist remains the same after restoration because art, to me, begins with an original idea and is produced through the mind behind the idea. However, in some cases, the artist with an idea might not produce it themselves. For an example, an architect makes an idea or blueprint for a building or interior. The idea is produced by the builders, but the building is credited to the architect. I believe this holds true for artwork as well. I do not believe art restorers should be able to restore art to a certain point. The more damaged a piece is, the harder it is to see the actual details. I do not believe these unseen details should be made up or modified by anyone other than the original artist, however I do believe art restorers are saints in their own.
