A project is a response to a brief devised by the assessor. A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue, or problem, or may involve a process such as a design task, performance or practical activity, or production of an artifact or event’

Guidelines:

Students are required to submit a research project of 2000-2500 words.

You must identify one area in society that may be oppressed and discuss this using a research format. Your research should link to sociological thought relating to discrimination and oppression of the chosen group.

Relate your findings to sociological thought using theorists to back up your findings and give recommendations to improve your social group’s status in society.

Assessment Criteria:

• Clear structure to essay
• Key issues discussed
• Clear understanding of the chosen group
• What if any anti-discriminatory practices are in place to protect your chosen group
• Understanding of the impact of inequality and discrimination
• Concise evaluation and recommendation
• Research/referencing/bibliography included

Planning and Presentation: Include a cover page that notes the title of your research project, your name, and the final word count, also include a contents page noting the sequence of page numbers and headings, etc. Construct your research project under each of the following headings:
1) Aim
2) Methodology (at least 4 explanatory points made)
3) Main topic giving an understanding of relevant issues regarding e.g. discrimination,
prejudice, racism, and associated terms
4) Exploration of sociological issues with your chosen topic giving relevant examples

5) References made to primary and secondary research
6) Your inferences are sensible
7) Conclusion giving 2 or more critical points
8) Your personal reflection on what you have learned while doing this research project

In completing the research project, you must demonstrate/show the following:

 Understanding of sociology and its relevance to your topic in society
 Use basic research skills by summarising the differences between your primary and secondary research and qualitative/quantitative methods
 Use a variety of media to access information
 Use /design appropriate survey methods e.g. questionnaires, interviews, observations, etc.

 Exercise initiative and independence by investigating the experience of discrimination in the group you have chosen

 Process and present your findings in a clear and precise way to draw conclusions for your analysis that discusses possible strategies for alleviating discriminating practices

 Reference and give a bibliography
