Q27. The following paragraphs are an extract from a publication by Australian Institute on of Health and Welfare on ‘Effects of Trauma’ in 2013.

The article states that trauma can affect the development of children in that a child’s development can be impaired or slowed down as a result of trauma. It also says that if a child is exposed to long-term trauma, the developmental effects can be permanent.

The article further says that if children are exposed to trauma, their ‘survival mechanisms’ (anticipates, prevents or protects against the damage caused by potential dangers) can become dominant over the ‘learning mechanisms’ (responsible for engaging in the acquisition of new knowledge) in the brain. In traumatised children the survival mechanism takes over and the development of the child is impaired, meaning that the child’s development and education can be severely affected.

Trauma has also been shown to have the following effects on children:

  1. It violates the child’s sense of safety, trust and self-worth, with a loss of the sense of ‘self’
  2. It can trigger emotional distress, shame and grief

iii. It can result in aggressive behaviour and an inability on the child’s part to negotiate relationships with care givers, peers and later, marital spouses

  1. It can disrupt attachment styles, leading to interpersonal difficulties

Childhood trauma is also more likely to cause children and adults to adopt behaviours of self-harm, including alcoholism and other drug misuse, sexual promiscuity, physical inactivity and smoking, and increases the likelihood of children becoming involved in criminal activities into adulthood.

Finally, childhood trauma can result in health concerns like heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and liver disease, all of which contribute to lower life expectancy.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation Development Team sums up the problems in Indigenous populations as follows:

‘many of the problems prevalent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities today—alcohol abuse, mental illness and family violence …have their roots in the failure of Australian governments and society to acknowledge and address the legacy of unresolved trauma still inherent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.’

  • Make decisions
  • Communicate
  • Understand
  • Retain information

Outline your response in two (2) — four (4) sentences for each.

Q28. Based on your responses (from question 27), suggest and explain three (3) ways that you could improve the way that you communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Include in your response, how you would evaluate the success of each strategy.

Outline your response in 50 — 100 words.

Q29. You are required to reflect on a significant event in your own cultural heritage that has influenced your current values, beliefs and attitudes.

  • Describe what happened
  • How has this influenced the way in which your culture responds to the Australian environment?
  • How do you think these cultural attitudes affects your interaction with people from other diverse cultures in Australia?
