iv) Relative Location on Topographic Maps: Absolute Distance and Direction

23) Examine the 1:50,000 scale Topographic Map 3. The absolute, real-world distance between location U and location V is _________________________ km (rounded to one decimal place).

3 Marks

To receive full marks on this question, show—in the space below—how you calculated this real-world distance:

24) Examine the 1:50,000 scale Topographic Map 3. Starting at location U, the direction to location V is _________________ ° (azimuth) __________________ (closest compass point, including—if applicable—secondary intercardinal points).

v) Using a Basic Geographic Information System (GIS)

Open the ArcGIS My Map application you used in Activity 4. A hyperlink is embedded in the preceding text. Should this not work, you may also cut and paste into your browser search window the following web address:

https://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?useExisting=1

With the My Map application open, type in ‘Widgeon Lake’ into the ‘Find Address or Place’ search window on the top right-hand side of the webpage. The lake is located in SW British Columbia, between Coquitlam Lake to the west, and Pitt Lake to the east. Zoom in to the point where the bar scale represents a real-world distance of 1km.

Drag the map (click on the map and drag it using your mouse/pad) so that Widgeon Lake is centered on your screen. Close the inset blue and white ‘Search Result’ box so that your view of this area is unobstructed.

27) Which one of the following latitude and longitude coordinates most accurately identifies the absolute location of a point in the middle of Widgeon Lake?

  • a) 49.45°S, 122.67°E
  • b) 49.45°N, 122.63°W
  • c) 49.45°W, 122.63°E
  •  d) 49.45°N, 122.67°W

1 Mark

28) Which one of the following most accurately describes the land use/type to the east of Widgeon Lake?

29) Which one of the following most accurately identifies the absolute distance of the length of the Widgeon Lake from the NW side to the SE side of the lake?

  • a) 2.4km
  •  b) 1.9km
  • c) 1.7km
  • d) 2.9km

2 Marks

30) Which one of the following most accurately identifies the area, in square km, of Widgeon Lake?
