Task summary
For this task you will need to develop a collaborative partnership arrangement for SimIT. The
partnership should be between SimIT and a community group (which may be public or
private).
This assessment task requires you to:
demonstrate and model skills and knowledge to foster partnerships, conduct
stakeholder consultation and use strategic and personally enhancing
communication skills
develop collaborative approaches to enhance individual, team and organisational
outcomes
initiate and implement partnerships in line with relevant regulatory, employment and
organisational requirements.
Resources and equipment required to complete this task

email software (if required).

document.

Case-study
Exploring new collaborative partnerships: NBA Africa
In February 2014, Alan Davies, chief executive of Rio Tinto’s Diamonds & Minerals product
group, attended the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) conference on Africa
development during the annual All-Star weekend in New Orleans, US. While some of the
world’s greatest basketball players competed on court, behind the scenes, global business
leaders met to discuss partnerships and the future of African social and economic
development.

On the heels of the Africa Mining Indaba conference, Alan attended a number of NBA
sponsored events with 40 business leaders to discuss Rio Tinto’s vision for African
development and how collaborative partnerships can deliver economic impact. He
discussed Rio Tinto’s 50-year history on the continent and the opportunities he sees in the
seven countries in which the company operates.
“It is critical that we find ways for the business community and development groups to
work together to address important issues such as unemployment, health and youth
development for the benefit of both local communities and the businesses around those
communities,” said Alan.
The common thread between Indaba and the NBA Africa meetings was that leaders from
around the world remain optimistic about Africa’s future and the role the extractives
industry will play in it. Many companies, including Exxon, shared how their partnerships with
the NBA were having a positive material impact on their business and the communities in
which they operate.
Rio Tinto is increasingly using its experience and expertise to further work alongside
governments, international agencies, community groups and non-government
organisations (NGOs). That objective was advanced in New Orleans as new relationships
were formed and discussions with the NBA about advancing mutually beneficial initiatives
were explored.
In particular, Alan met with former NBA players Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe
Mutombo, as well as NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum. Both players are very active in
African development and they shared views on the benefits their NBA programmes
provide for corporate entities and communities. Mark Tatum also shared that the NBA will
be hosting its first ever game in South Africa this August.
Much like Rio Tinto, the NBA views Africa as a growing market with great opportunity.
Around the world, the NBA has had success in advancing their business objectives by
partnering with corporate stakeholders, governments and NGOs. In Africa, they are
working to grow their footprint by engaging more fans, create positive social change, and
increase their brand awareness through programmes such as NBA Cares and Basketball
without Borders.
“Cultivating and building collaborative partnerships with respected organisations will have
positive results on our business. In particular, the NBA Africa development programme
could have a significant impact on youth and unemployment in countries like South
Africa,” said Alan.

Like Indaba, the NBA Africa events further validated what Rio Tinto has promoted
for decades: collaborative partnerships are a critical part of developing pathways
forward for all stakeholders on the African continent.

outline the legislative and regulatory context of the organisation (SimIT)
outline SimIT’s mission, purpose, values, objectives and strategies
explain techniques that cultivate collaborative relationships and partnerships
describe data collection methods
explain the external context including social, political, economic and technological
developments
explain emotional intelligence and its relationship to individual and team
effectiveness
explain organisational transformation and the management of the stages of change.
