HAVE YOU
ATTENDED/WATCHED
YOUR TUTORIALS
AND WORKSHOPS
AND ENGAGED WITH
YOUR MODULE
CONTENT?
We carefully break down the tasks in the workshops
each week to help you understand what the task
requires and what information you need to include in
each part of the task
The tutorials and learning materials are also
important, if you are not engaging with these you are
not engaging with the learning that you need to
respond to your task
This is also where you are going to access a lot of your
unit materials which you need to engage with for your task
It is a part of the criterion for task 2 that you show
thorough engagement with these materials (… which
means you need to know them and have read and
engaged with them)

WORDING AND
TERMINOLOGY
Use children, not kids (kids is not professional or respectful)
It is early childhood education and care (not childcare or
early childcare)
The National Quality Framework (NQF) and the National
Quality Standards (NQS) are not the same thing
(the NQS
is part of the NQF. The NQF also includes the national law and
regulation, and the approved learning frameworks – EYLF and
MTOP)
You must introduce an acronym before you use it the first
time
(the first time you use the Australian Children’s Education
and Care Quality Authority in text or in your citations you need
to write the full name with ACECQA following immediately after
in brackets. Then you can use the acronym after this. Same
applies for EYLF, DoE, NQS, etc.)

CITATIONS AND
REFERENCING
You must support your discussions with links to academic
literature throughout your writing.
Approximately one citation
every 100 words is a good goal.
If you are writing a sentence that includes a point you have
developed based on the literature you have read, you need to
cite this literature to show where the idea came from/the
source of the information in your sentence.
Remember that
this builds your discussion with the support of the literature you
have read on the issue
You need to cite immediately after what you have said that is
linked to that literature
(you can’t just cite your sources at the
end of a paragraph, you need to cite at the end of the sentence
that relates to that source)
The citations in your writing need to match your reference
list … I should be able to look at your citation and then easily
be able to find a reference list entry for this citation.
If you have not used a piece of literature in your in-text citations, you
can’t include it in your reference list
There needs to be a reference list entry for every one of your in-text
citations

ACADEMIC
INTEGRITY
You cannot copy and paste information from another
source and place it in your paper, you must paraphrase
your writing
When you are paraphrasing you need to change the words
AND the sentence structure (you can’t just change a few
words)
Even when paraphrasing you need to appropriately cite
the literature you have used to build the point you are
outlining/the information you are providing
You should use quotesVERY minimally in your academic
writing, and only if they are directly relevant to what you
are saying. Consider if the quote would be better off being
paraphrased

WORD COUNT AND
ANSWERING TASK
QUESTIONS
Your response to the task must be between 1800 and
2200 words. No less and no more.
(This is because you
MUST maintain a word count within +/-10% of the set word
count of 2000 words)
Be succinct but specific when answering questions.
Think carefully about the question you are answering and what
the reader needs to know about the question
Focus on these key points in your response and make sure you
only answer the question
Make your key points clear – imagine that the reader has not
read what you have about this issue, will they know what you are
talking about?)

HAVE YOU LOOKED
AT THE
ASSESSMENT TASK
2 FREQUENTLY
ASKED
QUESTIONS?
Q: When is Assessment Task 2 due?
A: You need to submit your final task before 11:59am on Sunday 16th of April.
Q:
Do I need a title page?
A: Yes, you need to include a title page in line with APA 7th formatting. An example
of this is given in your slides in the Module 4 Workshop. You can also watch the
recording of this workshop where we discussed this.
Q: What issue can I use as the topic for my position paper?
A: You can choose etiher obesity (Module 4), the early childhood workforce
(Module 5), or technology (Module 4).
Q:
Can I include the questions as headings in this task.
A: No. You cannot use sub headings in this task, it should be one discussion with no
headings. Instead you need to use topic sentences in your paragraphs to highlight
where you are addressing the a to e areas for your chosen issue.
Q:
How do I write a paragraph with a topic sentence?
A: AN example of how to do this is provided in your slides in the Module 4
Workshop. You can also watch the recording of this workshop where we discussed
this, and refer to this helpful Quick Guide –
https://www.scu.edu.au/media/scueduau/staff/teaching-and-learning/ctl-documentdownloads/as-quick-guides/Planning-and-body-writing-paragraphs-worksheet.pdf
Q: What is the word count for this task?
A: This is a 2000-word task. That means that your position paper must be between
1800 words (minimum) and 2200 words (maximum).
Q:
How many references do I need?
A: About one reference per every 100 words is a good number to aim for in an
academic task. You may need more than this depending on what you are writing
about and how.

WHAT QUESTIONS
DO YOU NEED TO
ADDRESS IN YOUR
POSITION PAPER?
a) Introduce the issue of workforce in early childhood
education and care
b) Outline who early childhood education and care
workforce issues affect and how
c) Critically review workforce issues in early
childhood from the various perspectives presented
in the literature (this could include media articles)
d) Present and justify your position on workforce
issues within early childhood education and care
e) Outline how workforce issues within the early
childhood profession could be resolved or
improved

INTRODUCE THE
ISSUE OF
WORKFORCE IN
EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION AND
CARE
a) What do we need our reader to know about the
early childhood workforce?
b) What do we know about issues in the early
childhood workforce?
c) Are there current issues with the early childhood
workforce?
d) Should we be concerned about issues in the
workforce? Which issues and why?

OUTLINE WHO
EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION AND
CARE WORKFORCE
ISSUE AFFECT AND
HOW
Who is impacted by issues within the early childhood
workforce today
The workforce itself? – current workforce? future
workforce? – how are they affected?
Children? – all children? some children? are certain
groups of children more or less disadvantaged? – how
are children/these groups of children affected
The early childhood sector? – all services? certain
services? the sector as a whole? the profession? –
how are these affected by this issue?
Society? – in the short term? in the medium term? in
the long term?
Anyone one else?
Anything else?
CRITICALLY REVIEW
WORKFORCE ISSUES
IN EARLY
CHILDHOOD FROM
THE VARIOUS
PERSPECTIVE SIN
THE LITERATURE
(THIS COULD
INCLUDE MEDIA
ARTICLES)
Remember that the literature will have different opinions
BUT you are not saying one opinion is right or wrong here
you are just putting forward (presenting and
refuting) the issue of the early childhood workforce
based on the perspectives writing in the literature
about the topic.
You could do this by considering these kinds of positions
that may be present in the literature:
What does the media say about the issue of early childhood
workforce?
What does the government say about the issue of early
childhood workforce?
What do educators say about the issue of early childhood
workforce?
What do peak bodies (ACECQA, Early Childhood Australia) say
about the issue of early childhood workforce?
Don’t forget that you must support this critical review with
literature that supports the perspectives you are putting
forward.

PRESENT AND
JUSTIFY YOUR
POSITION ON
WORKFORCE
ISSUES WITHIN
EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION AND
CARE
Here you are putting forward your position from the
perspective of an early childhood teacher
AND
Justifying this position by using literature to support
what you are saying (you CANNOT justify a position
with backing your discussion up with academic
sources).
What do you think about the issue of the early
childhood workforce as an early childhood teacher?
Why do you think this way (what literature has
supported you to come to/develop this position on
the early childhood workforce)?

OUTLINE HOW
WORKFORCE
ISSUES WITHIN
THE EARLY
CHILDHOOD
PROFESSIONAL
COULD BE
RESOLVED OR
IMPROVED
This is a fairly broad area, but you could consider:
What can EC services do?
What can the government do?
What could ACECQA do?
What could educators do?
What could ______ do?
