Infrastructure
Water and Wastewater Assignment Outline:
You are asked to prepare a preliminary conceptual design for the management of water,
wastewater, stormwater, and recycled water for the redevelopment of the Long Bay
Correctional Complex. Your design should be inspired by water efficient design, onsite reuse and recycling as well as conforming to the appropriate National Water Quality
Management Strategy and Local Government requirements.
In preparing your report you should include the following sections:
1. Describe the general needs for the redevelopment in terms of potable water supply,
wastewater generation, onsite stormwater generation and landscaping. (Define
scope of the water services needed to be provided and identify sustainability goals?)
2. Estimate potential water saving amounts against the ‘business as usual’ situation
using data from similar developments as a benchmark. (This will provide you with
something to compare your design against)
3. Assess options for the integrated water management for the different site
infrastructure requirements (e.g. efficient water use, water reuse and recycling,
greywater, onsite treatment options). (What options are available and are they
suitable according to the Island context?)
4. Discuss your water and wastewater design for the different sites. (How does your
design fit together? Providing evidence of why it is sustainable?) To support your
technical discussion, include graphs/figures showing onsite water, wastewater,
stormwater and recycled water flows, compared to the ‘business as usual’ approach.
Also provide physical infrastructure requirements needed to support your conceptual
design (estimate areas for services, storage volumes, etc.).
State all assumptions used in your analysis, such as consumption rates by different water
needs (i.e. drinking water, irrigation water etc.). You must also consider regulatory
requirements for water management and disposal and include consideration for the cultural
and social background. Consider supporting statements and arguments by referencing
literature and/or case studies or calculations. If additional information eg. raw data,
calculations and material are included in the appendix must be clearly presented with
captions and referencing information (as required). Your conceptual design will need to be

incorporated with the other Assignment 4 – technical reports in your group’s Video
Presentation (Assignment 2).
