Context
The EWB Challenge offers projects in a number of areas that have been identified as key areas for improving the well-being of people in Suco Holarua in the Manufahi district of Timor-Leste. To provide effective solutions for problems in these areas, it is important for engineers to understand the history and culture of the people they are working with. In particular, it is important to understand the injustices that external (and internal) agents may have caused in the past, so that these mistakes are not repeated in the future. It is also important to identify possible negative social consequences of implementing an EWB design into these communities.
The Task
Write a 1500 word analytical essay about one or more social justice issues associated with at least one of the project topics in the 2019 EWB Challenge in Suco Holarua in the Manufahi district of Timor-Leste.
Imagine that you are working for a small engineering team which has been assigned to an engineering project in Socu Holarua, and have been tasked by your manager with writing the briefing document on the social and cultural environment for the team. What does the team need to understand about Socu Holarua before work can begin?
Your essay should provide the background understanding of at least one relevant social justice issue needed by a team of engineers considering working in the Manufahi region.
Make sure your analytical essay demonstrates a link between one or more social justice issues and at least one of the challenge projects. Note that the essay should focus specifically on issues related to the project area and Suco Holarua in the Manufahi district of Timor-Leste, although you can introduce material of a more general nature about the history, environment and culture of Timor-Leste. Your essay should support your claim with relevant explanations and examples taken from suitable academic reference sources, including sources provided by EWB.
