The world of work is changing. Profound transformations are taking place that affect both public and private sectors regardless of their level of economic development. There are various key drivers contributing to these trends.

Compare and contrast industrial relations changes undertaken in public and private sectors.

You are required to choose one private sector organization and compare it with the public sector and evaluate the significance of these changes, in terms of the following:

  • Policy making
  • Role of state
  • Employee involvement and participation
  • Grievance procedure and dispute settlement

This project seeks to test students understanding and awareness of these IR/ER issues and the ability of students to relate these issues to the country/sectors and organizations which they have selected and be able to shed light through practical examples. Here students may be required to interview private sector organizations and public sector officials as well.

  • Introduction

In the introduction students are required to give a brief background of the public and private sector organizations that they have selected to compare and contrast. Students are also required to state the purpose and challenges of the group project.

In-text referencing or citing sources of information is especially pertinent here. Acknowledge all sources within the body of the Introduction if you are using other people’s ideas.

  • Literature Review

In the literature review section students need to read a wide range of materials on the topic from textbooks, journals, articles, media, organizational or national reports etc. Students are expected to define public/private sectors, comparatively analyze the forms/types and changes in Industrial Relations that are currently unfolding between these sectors. Here, students need to state what is reflected in research through their readings from the various sources (example: textbooks, journal articles, online sources, etc) in relation to Policy Making, Role of state, Employee involvement and participation, Grievance procedure and Dispute Settlement.  In-text referencing or citing sources of information is especially pertinent here. Acknowledge all sources within the body. Finally, state the research objectives of the study.

  • Methodology

In this section students need to say how they collected information for their project. For example; to write up the sections on 1.0 & 2.0 above (may use secondary data. These secondary sources could include previous research reports, newspaper, magazine and journal content, and government and NGO statistics; etc, and to write up the section on findings, students could employ secondary research and also primary research resources. The most common primary research resources are: social surveys (questionnaire surveys & interviews: informal or structured) and observation (participant (overt) or covert (masked identity).

  • Findings: Discussion & Analysis

In this section, students need to relate the ideas that they got from reading in particular 2.0 above to their research findings (from the organization of your choice).  Based on the organization selected then, they need to provide examples of the various types/forms of changes that exists in Industrial Relations within the public sector as well as private sector organizations in Fiji. In this section, students will be discussing their research findings (based on secondary or primary sources of information) and this needs to be linked to what they have learnt through their reading.

Conclusion

This is a summary of the entire project and the objectives need to be linked here. The writers point of view can be included in this section.
