What benefit is there to understanding different viewpoints and cultural perspectives when teaching history?
The teacher, learner and subject matter are the core ingredients in teaching and learning history (Taylor & Young, 2003). Teachers also have their
personal and professional histories, knowledge and ideas about the purpose of teaching history and those frames teachers’ decisions about the
content to teach to the children. By acknowledging that children also have different perspectives towards history, teachers tailor the teaching and
learning experiences that are purposeful for children.
Similarly, children also come to the early learning centres with their own versions of the past, and views about the importance of particular events
and people drawn from their ecological system. Teachers need to encourage children to talk about themselves to connect with the learners and plan
the experiences that teaches history to children.
Understanding different viewpoints and cultural perspectives when teaching history helps us teachers to integrate new subject matter with students’
prior knowledge because children can make sense of the teaching that is occurring for the first time by associating it with their prior knowledge. For
further historical understanding, learner’s prior knowledge acts as the scaffold or ladder and therefore, teachers need to consider the prior
knowledge of children when teaching history to them. Understanding the different viewpoints of children also aids teachers in acknowledging their
historical events and situations in terms of how they affect their life and being mindful about how can we teach history to them.
Overall, acknowledgement of different viewpoints and perspectives about different cultural beliefs and history of different individuals benefits both
teachers and learners and can contribute to creating a better world. We can teach history without judgements when we have the awareness about
different cultural perspectives. For example, when teaching students about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ history, teachers need to
be considerate of not displaying the photo of dead people to children who come from same cultural background.
