SCI6103 Semester 1 – Supplementary Assessment
Due date: Friday, 14th July 11.59pm Australian Eastern Standard TimeSample Page
Marks out of: 100
Hurdle: Students must achieve 50% of the marks in this assessment item to satisfactorily pass the
course.
Purpose: This assessment will assess course objectives 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6
You are required to complete a supplementary assessment due to the overall grade you have
received over the past semester.
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
1. Analyse and review data integrity approaches including methods of data collection prior to
conducting research;
2. Apply a range of high level skills in information management using database applications and
computing systems;
3. Apply a range of high level communication skills effectively, including verbal, written and
digital literacy when interacting with diverse audiences;
4. Critically analyse and interpret research through peer review;
5. Critically evaluate the varieties of scientific method with historical examples;
6. Integrate and apply academic ethical approaches when conducting and communicating
research
You must pass this assessment in order to pass the course overall. If you fail the assessment you will
fail the course overall.
The aim of this supplementary assessment is to review and assess the techniques you were required
to learn about this past semester that align with the course objectives. You must demonstrate that
you can apply these techniques satisfactorily to demonstrate that you have achieved the course
objectives.
It is strongly recommended that you review all the recommended course materials before
completing this assessment. It has been noted from past student performance that students who do
not take the time to complete the assessment with careful consideration and thought, do not pass
the course.
Students should note that this assignment will refer to their conduct during this course. The marker
will review previous assessment submissions and marker feedback to be sure it aligns with this
assessment item requirements. Therefore, students should also refer to their assignments and
received feedback, and study notes to ensure consistency in their submission.
Note: All sections require good academic integrity, including low Turnitin similarity matches, and
professional writing requirements such as spelling and grammar. Where this is not applied will
result in penalties for each section that it appears. Any evidence of Academic Misconduct will be
assessed according to the Academic Integrity Schedule and Procedure.
Part A – Reflection on Portfolio application to the research question
(400 to 800 words; 20 marks)
This section of the assignment will assess your ability to reflect on the process of completing the first
assignment of this course, the Research Question Development Portfolio. Students will need to
review their assignment and assignment results, and apply their reflective writing skills in order to
achieve the objectives of this part of the supplementary assessment. In this part of the assignment,
students need to reflect using the 4Rs process. Students will be examined on the breadth and depth
of their reflection.
Students should note that repeating what the assignment results and feedback were provided to
them, will not be considered a suitable assessment submission and will be accordingly awarded zero
marks.
What to do:
Using your Research Question Development Portfolio, and the results and feedback provided, reflect
on the process of carrying out the Portfolio tasks as they related to developing the research
question. Students should reflect across all parts of the assignment using the 4Rs process. Some
informal prompting questions that may help with the reflection include:
• What tasks required in the Portfolio enabled deeper thinking about the research question?
• What tasks required in the Portfolio made you think differently about the research
question?
• What tasks were useful /constructive in developing the research question?
• What tasks were less useful/constructive in developing the research question?
Please note that this task is not just asking for answers to these questions, and is not just in the form
of “retelling”. This section should address all parts of the 4Rs (retell, relate, reflect and reframe) and
all tasks in the Portfolio. Please refer to the appropriate course materials to review the concepts of
reflective writing to ensure this
Note: It is expected you will refer to the feedback that was provided to you in the assignments.
Failure to use this feedback will result in low grades in this assessment task.
Students should aim to write between 400 and 800 words for this part of the assignment.
Part B – Reflection on the use of EndNote referencing management system (300 to
600 words; 20 marks)
This section of the assignment will assess how you reflect on your introduction to the EndNote
reference management software and how you used it.
Students should reflect how they used the EndNote software for Assignments 1 and 2 (using grades
from those assessments to inform their reflection) and what they learned through that process. It is
expected that students consider carefully each section of the 4Rs.
What to do:
Write 300 to 600 words on the process of how you learned and what you learned about EndNote
and how your applied it in your assignments using reflective practice. Students should pay particular
attention to the 4Rs process here. Students should make specific reference to the marked feedback
provided to them over the semester for each of the different tasks that required EndNote use.
Note: The assessment does not ask you to say how well you did the work over the semester.
Also, this task does not examine what you did over the semester.
Important: This task assesses on how you reflect on what you did. For example, if you did not do the
EndNote training and tried to learn how to use it in a rush, then discuss this event, why you did it and
what happened as a result. Look at the feedback and results you received and consider them
carefully. Then use the 4RS to structure your reflection.
Part C – Reflection on the key journal articles used in the literature review (500 to
1000 total words; 40 marks)
This section of the assignment will have two components.
The first component is the application of the EndNote management system used to cite and
reference the key journal articles you focused on in the Literature Review. Supplementary
assessments must be submitted as a file that clearly demonstrates the use of EndNote in the
assignment (.doc or .docx or other similar word processing documents). Lack of evidence of the use
of EndNote will result in zero marks for this entire section.
Note: PDF files do not demonstrate use of EndNote and therefore students who submit a pdf will be
awarded zero marks for this section.
The second component will require you to reflect on the use of some of the key journal articles that
you focused within Literature Review. Choose three of your key references used in your literature
review (you should use journal articles) and for each of these journal articles use the following
questions as prompts for the retell component of the 4Rs:
1. Why was this journal article chosen?
2. How was the journal article located (online search, database etc)?
3. How significant was this key reference in informing your assignment?
You will then provide responses to each retell, with the corresponding relate, reflect and reframe.
Each Journal article must be addressed using these questions and the 4Rs.
Overall – what you will do:
Using reflective practice, write a total 500 to 1000 words on the three key journal articles selected
from your EndNote library. It may be helpful to aim to write 150 – 350 words per article. The journal
articles must be correctly cited within the text when discussed, and correctly referenced in a
reference list after the reflective writing. The citations and references must be created using
EndNote. The reference list is not counted as part of the word count.
Note: When you discuss the articles, you are not only discussing what each article is focused on. You
are using the prompting questions from above to review and reflect why and how the journal article
was relevant to your assignment.
Part D – Reflection on the process of peer review (300 to 500 words; 20 marks)
In this section you will reflect on the peer review process. Use the marked feedback provided from
each of the peer review tasks to inform your reflection in this section.
Here are some prompting questions to help you frame your reflection:
• What did you think about when you reviewed a peer’s work?
• Do you think you had the skills to peer review a colleague’s assessment item?
• Did reviewing another peer’s work provide you with any insights to your own assessment
submission?
• Consider the results you received when assessed on your peer reviewing skills. What did you
learn about yourself after viewing your own grades for the peer review process?
• Consider the feedback provided from the marker. Does your perception of your ability to
peer review match another’s?
What to do:
Using reflective practice, write 300 to 500 words about how you interpret the peer reviewing
process and how effectively you believe you managed the peer review in the assessments. Try not to
focus on if you did something in terms of “good” or “bad”, but instead consider what it meant for
you to conduct a peer review. Make sure you apply the 4Rs approach to your reflection on this
topic.
