Your task is to conduct a risk assessment using a topic of interest to you. The risk assessment
should involve the steps outlined below (Part 1). You will also present a summary of your risk
assessment via zoom (Part 2).
There are two parts to this assessment task:
Part 1: Written risk assessment (45%)
Step 1: Choose a topic to conduct a risk assessment. Explain why your chosen topic is of
concern, i.e. why a risk assessment should be conducted (issue identification).
Step 2: Select a risk assessment method and justify why you chose that method.
The method is most likely to be Environmental Health Risk Assessment framework.
Step 3: Apply the selected risk assessment method to your chosen topic (Hazard
identification, dose-response relationship, exposure assessment, risk characterisation and
communication). The topic you choose must be a hazard that has adequate data in order to
carry out a dose response assessment e.g. tolerable daily intake (TDI), guideline value,
otherwise you cannot conduct the risk characterization. You must use a technique for risk
characterization e.g. hazard quotient/ hazard index/ margin of exposure etc. You must
include a CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAM of exposure.
If you choose to use a different risk assessment technique (i.e. not EHRA), please email me to
discuss.
Step 4: Discuss the results including uncertainties, data gaps, etc.
Discuss the strengths and limitations, any uncertainties related to the available data and what
may be missing.
Step 5: Conclusion.
Briefly summarise your risk assessment.

PART 2 – oral presentation of risk assessment
In this part, you will use your written risk assessment to develop one Powerpoint slide and
two minutes of script which you will present online to the class in Week 12.
Only include details from your written risk assessment, do not introduce any new information.
Your Powerpoint slide must include references. The outcome of this part of the assessment
is that you demonstrate an ability to communicate content that you are familiar with, online
via a videoconferencing program to your peers.
The Powerpoint slide will include:
• Title (of risk assessment)
• Your name
• Issue identification
• Risk assessment method used
• Results/Conclusions
• References (these can be in 8 font)
The slide needs to be readable (i.e. appropriate font size), include at least one image or
graphic, and be engaging.
Acknowledging that not all students can log on during class time, there is the option to record
your presentation and upload it via Canvas (link to be supplied).

More details
Choose a topic of interest and add your intended topic and your risk assessment method to
Discussion Board by Week 4.
If you choose a topic related to your current workplace make sure that you observe the QUT
ethical guidelines, http://www.orei.qut.edu.au/
The important aspect from the assignment perspective is that you understand the
Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) framework and can use it to carry out a risk
assessment in either the environmental health or occupational health and safety field. It is
essential that your writing is succinct and relevant. Your task to is produce a risk assessment,
NOT to summarise a risk assessment written by someone else.
PLEASE NOTE: you may NOT use the same hazard in this unit as used in another unit e.g.
PUP250 or PUN102.
