Title: Perceptions and Awareness among Healthcare Professionals of Radiation Doses and Radiation Risk in Medical Imaging: A Critical Review of the Literature
Word count – please add your word count here – you only need to state the word count for the overall work and not for each section.
The maximum word count is 2500 words (+10%). The word count INCLUDES any diagrams or tables (if you should decide to include these) and all in-text references.
The word count EXCLUDES the reference list and the two required appendices.
Penalties apply for exceeding the maximum word count (please see Important information for all Students under Assessment Information ).
Introduction (approximately 200 words)
Introduce the subject and why it is an important area for research (For example, you could consider which healthcare workers need to know about radiation and why this is). This provides justification for the literature review to follow. You should also provide any background or explanatory information that you think supports the narrative (try to think about what your reader will need to know before they read the review). If available, relevant facts and figures can be used to show the scope of the topic. State clearly what the literature review aims to achieve.
Search strategy (approximately 300 words).
You should briefly outline the search strategy used to access the literature that you used to develop your argument. This should include the selection of databases and keywords (and their synonyms); how the terms were combined (e.g. use of Boolean operators); and inclusion and exclusion criteria for selection (such as age, types or quality of literature). You should state how information was extracted from the research and what critical appraisal tool was used to ensure the validity of the research used. You should support these choices with reference to appropriate research methodology literature to justify your choices. You should record your search strategy in the table in appendix 1 and make a link to this within this section.
Results and Critical discussion of the literature (approximately 1700 words)
This is the main section of your literature review. You should provide a balanced argument using the literature to support your discussion. The search strategy will have highlighted many pieces of literature, but it is not necessary to discuss all of these. You should select those that are most relevant, and which give a representative sample of all viewpoints. You should summarise these.
The structure of this section is determined by the themes that emerge from the literature. You should try to link together studies that bear relevance to these themes. Each theme will form a new paragraph.
You should critically discuss at least FIVE pieces of primary research literature on the subject. A critical discussion needs to refer not only to the findings or argument presented by the author of that study but also takes into consideration the context of these findings, and the quality of the research. A simple way to do this is described by Aveyard (2010) who suggests that for each research paper you state the aims, method, and the main findings, followed by consideration of pertinent limitations or strengths of the study. You can then comment on the impact you feel it has on developing your argument.
You should refer to appropriate research methods literature to support any critical comments you make about the research methods used by authors, to help you meet the learning outcomes for this module.
Conclusion (approximately 300 words)
Here you will briefly summarise the concluding statements – what are the key findings of the literature review? Are there any gaps in the knowledge or need for further research? Can you make any conclusions from the evidence discussed?
References
Write your reference list, which will include the research articles and the referenced research methods literature you have used to support your discussion. Make sure you also reference your critical appraisal tool. You must use the 2020-21 HSK School guidelines in presenting both your reference list and in-text citations.
Appendices
You should provide the two appendices as outlined below. These are NOT included in the word count and are not allocated a mark but will be helpful to you to demonstrate that you have undertaken a robust literature search and aid in construction of the discussion. You can refer to them as appropriate within the body of your essay.
Appendix 1- Search strategy table
This should demonstrate how the literature search was undertaken. What we are looking for is evidence that you have used a robust and methodological approach. You should refer to this in the search strategy section.
Search strategy |
||||||
Databases Used E.g. PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane library, NICE Evidence, UH online library |
Keywords/ Key Concepts e.g. “radiation”, “awareness”, “healthcare workers” |
Alternative spellings, synonyms, phrases to key words/key concepts (if applicable) used e.g. “X-ray” “knowledge” Doctors, nurses, radiographers |
Description of how search was refined How did you combine your words to obtain the most relevant information for your topic? e.g “radiation” AND (“awareness OR knowledge) AND “healthcare workers” OR doctors OR nurses OR radiographers) |
Limits Applied to the Search e.g. year, language, country, publication, types of research |
Usefulness of search-were you able to extract useful information/data from previous studies from this search |
No. of Articles Returned in a Particular Search- e.g. no. of articles/ review articles |
Appendix 2 – Summary of studies table
Constructing this table will help you make sense of the literature you will use to develop your argument. It provides a “snap-shot” of the article and will make it easier to keep in mind the key points you might want to include in your discussion. You only need to include those journal articles you have chosen to use in your discussion. This should be a minimum of FIVE journal articles, but you may use more.
Author/date How you would reference in-text |
Aim of study What did the research set out to achieve? |
Description of study E.g. cross-sectional survey of radiography students using questionnaire |
Main findings/conclusions What are the key findings you found through your analysis of the study? |
Strengths and limitations of the study (state only the most pertinent points identified through your critical appraisal) | |
