Event Research Report – Glastonbury 20% Thursday 30/03/2023

 

NOTE: It is not necessary to have attended the event. To research the event you should seek out as many sources as you can and they may come from academic or non-academic sources. These could be newspapers, web sites, social media, magazines and street press in researching and reviewing the event. When citing any academic or practitioner literature please use the Harvard style guide (a study guide is available via the VU Library website) to ensure you properly reference this material in your work.

Investigate and classify Glastonbury as an event.

Assess the social impact that Glastonbury has on both the local community in and around (Somerset, UK) as well as its broader contribution within the UK and beyond.

Assess the economic impact that the event has not only for the owners but for the regional economy and more broadly  over the period of the festival.

Lastly, assess the role of environmental sustainability and the various initiatives undertaken at Glastonbury to “tread more lightly”. Therefore you need to discuss and consider the actions, activities and educative role the organisers have developed for the festival and how that may have evolved over time.

 

 

Purpose

 

The purpose of this assessment task is to:

To assess a global contemporary music and arts festival through the triple bottom line approach (TBL) using a range of information sources to assess how the event delivers upon social, economic and environmental outcomes.

 

 

 

Assessment Structure

 

The assessment takes the form of a report structure. Therefore you should pay attention to Table of Contents, Executive Summary and the inclusion of page numbers, reference lists and Harvard formatting. Please ensure that you check spelling, grammar, font sizes and acknowledge all images or in text references. The work is to be 1.5 or double spaced and can be in Times New Roman or Arial 11 or 12pt.

The use of images to illustrate your work can be incorporated as long as sources are acknowledged.

Glastonbury, is a historic music and arts event held in Somerset in the South West of England, UK. It is one of the longest running contemporary music and arts festivals in the world. Your task in this assessment is to seek out information that can inform your discussion about how Glastonbury has been so successful with an emphasis on TBL (triple bottom line) reporting.

This research assignment seeks to assess the event against a number of key criteria specifically in relation to its impacts.

It is not essential to have attended Glastonbury yourself, as many sources of information are available via the internet. However, rather than rely upon one or two sources for your information, you are encouraged to obtain at least six sources as a minimum which will inform your review. Those sources you seek can be both academic sources related to Glastonbury (either academic texts or journal articles) or non-academic sources that may include newspaper or magazine articles, case studies, reports, blogs, social media and other sources uncovered in your ‘desk top’ research. The task for this first assignment is to critically assess Glastonbury against economic, social and environmental impacts. Further you need to assess how significant its role is as a model for contemporary music festivals globally. It is expected that you will investigate how it has evolved over time and its success or failure financially and in its role for addressing social and environmental sustainability.

Assess the Social impact that Glastonbury has on both the local community in and around (Somerset, UK) as well as its broader contribution within the UK and beyond. Use examples of stated objectives, policies, partnerships and outcomes in the support of your answer 

Assess the Economic impact that the event has not only for the owners but for the regional economy over the period of the festival. The economic impact may be on the profitability of the event itself, the economic contribution of the event on the region or its role in increased national and international event based tourism. Make sure that you quote the sources and dates of the information and statistics that may support your answers.

Lastly, assess the role of Environmental sustainability and the various initiatives undertaken at Glastonbury to “tread more lightly. Therefore you need to discuss and consider the actions, activities and educative role the organisers have developed for the festival.

Criterion 5: The Event’s environmental impact 15%

Criterion 6: The alignment of the assessment with the nominated style guide incorporating but not limited to spelling, grammar, presentation, referencing 25%
