Assessment 1 – Project
For the purpose of this project you are required to select your workplace or a simulated operation with staff (colleagues) relevant to your training as negotiated with or instructed by your trainer or teacher.
You are required to develop a complete WHS system for the chosen organisation, addressing all criteria outlined below. For this purpose you will be required to consult with colleagues to identify existing work place processes, WHS processes and procedures in order to develop the actual WHS system. All evidence of consultation must be documented, including names, dates and details discussed and attached to this project.
Your work may be submitted electronically or as instructed by your trainer or teacher. Where links are provided you are encouraged to access these to explore supporting information and aids provided.
NB: All sources you access and use for the purpose of developing this WHS system, must be listed and referenced.
Provide an overview of the activities carried out by your organisation. Include a statement for the structure, characteristics and needs of the organisation.
Access the state legislation relevant to your state of training and the Safework website and identify the legislation that applies to the organisation.
Identify the relevant model Codes of Practice that apply for the organisation, for example Manual Handling; Managing the Work Environment and Facilities; Consultation etc.
Consult with your colleagues and identify:
Adequacy of facilities for employees
Issues with work environment
Existing arrangements for consulting
Issues with machinery, equipment or materials
Incidents or accidents which have occurred
Known or identified issues with training
Provisions for security emergency procedures in place
Based on the information you have identified relevant to your organisation in Questions 1 and 4, , develop a complete WHS system which includes all the required policies and procedures (examples can be found here: http://www.qha.org.au/whs-management-system.html) and relevant templates for all activities and legal requirements for the organisation including: (For templates visit: http://www.workplace-safety.com.au/diy-templates.html – this link also provides a WHS manual template)

training requirements for each policy and procedure you have developed and detail how you will ensure training can be effectively facilitated – this needs to include a training plan outline.
hazard identification and risk assessment provisions
designated times for hazard identification and categories of hazards that must be identified
acceptable mechanisms for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
requirements for record keeping and acceptable record keeping mechanisms
Develop a hazard identification and risk assessment template and attach instructions with examples how this is to be effectively used.
Select 3 job roles (1 must be for a manager or supervisor) relevant to your area of work in the organisation and write a job description which clearly defines the health and safety responsibilities for each job role.
Develop a master register which details all policies and procedures including legal reporting documents and include a proposed mechanism to ensure the system remains up-to-date and can be used to effectively monitor the organisations procedures and update these as required.
Provide an overview including an action plan how you will evaluate the effectiveness of the organisational WHS system you have developed including:
Provisions for assessing and maintaining ongoing compliance including a detailed checklist which references each policy and procedure you have developed.
Consultation and feedback mechanisms involving a range of personnel
Assessing the effectiveness of WHS management practices and amendments as a result where required.
Depending on the size and nature of your organisation, provide an overview of physical and HR costs required to implement and manage your WHS system (in Table Format). Consider requirements for equipment, PPE, staff attendance for consultation and risk assessment and training identified.
Prepare a plan with key notes to present the completed Work Health and safety system to your colleagues in readiness for implementation. This document will form the basis for Assessment 2 – Presentation and Implementation of WHS system. Your presentation plan should have provisions to document feedback for each component of the WHS system you will receive during this presentation.

Part C: Presentation and Evaluation
Assessment 2
You are required to present the completed WHS system that was determined in assessment to your colleagues or class.
The following is the requirements within this presentation:
Make a short presentation of your developed WHS system. This can either be in Word or in PowerPoint format
Explain to your audience the purpose of the WHS system you have developed including an overview of the legal ramifications of failing to observe WHS laws and codes of practice.
Communicate the individual responsibilities of staff in WHS procedures including ongoing consultation and risk assessment procedures.
Present the components and mechanisms of your developed system and seek feedback on:
Completeness in terms of policies and procedures
Provisions for communication and consultation
Accessibility and user friendliness
Create a feedback form and document all feedback received from your presentation plan.
Following the presentation and feedback received from your colleagues or peers compile this feedback received and provide a detailed summary with an overview of aspects that were queried or required improvement or further actions. Explain how you will address and rectify each aspect accordingly.
