MGMT20144 Assessment Item 1 (Business Case Analysis Essay): Writing Guidelines
Page 1: Cover Page with assessment and student details. Include the word count and
submission date on the cover page.
Page 2 onwards: Essay
Give your essay a title (optional)
You can include section headings (optional).
Introduction paragraph (about 100 words): Introduce the topic, state the purpose of the
essay, and the key points (scope) to be covered.
Case organization synopsis paragraph (about 100 words): Briefly provide some background
information which you deem essential and highly relevant to your analysis.
[Avoid direct ‘cut’
and ‘paste’ from organisation websites, paraphrase using your own words and put
organisation website as an in-text reference as per APA style]
Body paragraphs (about 900 words): You decide how to allocate words to answer your
selected question (list given below is just for illustration, refer to the assessment guidelines
document given on Moodle for assessment questions). Remember to
incorporate definitions
of key concepts (e.g., Risk) /theoretical frameworks (e.g., PESTEL)
in your answer. (See criteria
2 in Marking Rubric). Questions also require critical thinking and analysis based on
your research, hence allocate words accordingly. Using the in-text citation is very important
in this part of the essay, as it corresponds to evaluation criteria 2 and 3 and criteria 6.
1. What is the governance structure of your chosen organisation and why is it an effective
structure for the activities it carries out?
2. Which external environmental factors are influencing your chosen organisation’s performance
and decision-making?
3. What are the main risks your organisation faces and how could each influence its performance
and decision-making?
4. What business practices does your chosen organisation adopt and which are most critical to its
performance and decision-making, explain why?
5. What functional departments does your organisation have and how does each contribute to its
specific activities?
Conclusion paragraph (about 100 words): Once again, be concise. Provide a summary of your
key points in the essay (avoid using same sentences). Avoid introducing new topics (e.g.,
recently, the organization is involved in a scandal etc.), but do highlight implications on the
management of the organisation in the future on the basis of your analysis.
