<pjcbfjoap”>I. Overview

This course provides an introduction to the molecular and cellular aspects of modern biology. It introduces molecules that play key roles in biology, including DNA, proteins, and carbohydrates, and then goes on to describe their functions in cells. Cell function studies will be supported by cell structure studies. Cell specialization will be introduced with respect to multicellular organisms and interacting cellular networks. Topics covered include: the molecules of life; membranes and nutrient uptake; proteins, enzymes and metabolism; cell structure and function; cell specialization; the role of molecules and cells in the control of cell division and biotechnological applications. Examples will be drawn from plants and animals.

Two results

  1. Gain knowledge and understanding of the biochemical processes that underlie all life; the structure and function of cells from different domains and the development of cells and the role of cell specialization in multicellular organisms; molecular regulation of responses and cell fate decisions at the cellular level role in; and the ways in which biochemical, cellular and molecular level processes can explain cancer development and treatment options.
  2. Demonstrate academic integrity by acknowledging collaborators, citing scientific papers, and using paraphrases and summaries to report on the research of others.
  3. Use a compound microscope and safely handle biological samples using aseptic technique.
  4. Accurately record raw experimental data and apply knowledge of experimental limitations to interpret unreliable data.
  5. Present experimental data meaningfully in a written report and discuss the significance of the results.
  6. Gain a broad understanding of how biological knowledge develops and apply this framework to engage critically with new biological scenarios.
