Assessment 1:
Group Presentation by Discussants Details
Each week, a small group of 2-3 ‘Discussants’ (formed in-class in Week 2) shall lead the class discussion, with a short succinct presentation on three concepts from the theorist or theory scheduled for that week. Each student in the group should be prepared to explain/define one key concept each and give an example of its application to a social or practice issue. This will require some coordination between the group to avoid duplication and provide a complementary set of definitions. The presentation should conclude with the posing of three meaningful questions (one per discussant) to the wider group about the concepts and their relevance today.
This is not a formal presentation but rather a stimulus for further class discussion of the main theory for that week. It should take no more than 15 minutes and marks may be deducted for expositions that go longer. The object of the exercise is to get the class discussing the value of the theory and its uses for critical analysis.
Grades will be awarded to the for:
The clarity and accuracy of their explanation of the key concepts derived from the theory/ theorist for that week
The creativity and criticality of the application of the concept in making sense of a social or practice issue
The coherence and originality of the question posed to the class.
The final grade shall be averaged across each group. So, collaboration around who is presenting what – is advisable.
Each group should submit a record of their 3 concept definitions/explanations and their 3 questions for the class to their tutor either in person or via email at the end of each tutorial with all the discussants listed for that week. This can be either on a Word document or Power Point.
