Assessment Information

This coursework requires the submission of a statistical report on the topic of house prices’ behaviour in Germany. The total number of words of this report should be approximately equal to 1500 words.

More specifically, your statistical report should focus on the topic “What are the determinants of house prices in Germany?” and should include:

1) An Introductionhighlighting the importance of the topic and briefly discussing the theories and evidence provided by existing literature. This discussion should be based on peer-reviewed credible sources such as textbooks, newspaper articles, journal articles, etc. Your introduction should not exceed 400 words.

2) A Descriptive Statistics analysis that should include:

2.1) Descriptive Statistic Table with measures of location, dispersion and shape for each variable.

2.2) Histogram graphs for each variable (including Normal distribution curve).

2.3) Interpretation of the descriptive statistic table and histogram should be restricted to the variable of interest i.e., House Prices and that should focus on the following measures: for measures of location (or central tendency) – mean, median & mode; for measures of dispersion – standard deviation, range, interquartile range & coefficient of variation; for measures of shape – skewness. Interpretation of the graph should focus on the shape of the variable of interest’s distribution.

3) A Correlationanalysis that should include:

3.1) Pearson correlation table and interpretation of respective correlation coefficients.

3.2) Scatter diagrams (including trend line) and interpretation of these diagrams.

3.3) Hypothesis Tests: Interpretation of the degree of association between the dependent variable and each of the independent variables based on the results of significance tests presented in the Pearson correlation table.

4) A Regressionsection that should include:

4.1) Regression Model estimation results i.e. regression model Table and mathematical expression.

4.2) Model Fit Table and respective interpretation.

4.3) Hypothesis Test on Model Significance Table and interpretation of respective Fstatistic result.

4.4) Hypothesis Tests on Variables Significance Table and interpretation of respective tstatistics results.

5) A Conclusionthat should briefly summarise the main findings of your study and provide a comparison between your study’s findings and those from existing related-literature. Your conclusion should not exceed 300 words.

Note: Successful submissions should be written in an essay format. 10 marks will be given to the formatting, proper citation of the relevant literature used to support the discussion of the research question; in addition, you should use written language that is clear, accurate, and appropriate to the task.

You MUST only use secondary data sources  for this assignment (i.e., information already in the public domain such as textbooks, newspaper articles, journal articles, etc.).

Criteria for Assessment and Learning Outcomes

The table attached below (pg. 5) details the criteria by which your work will be assessed.

This assignment is designed to assess the following learning outcomes at an applied level:

  1. Utilise the use of spreadsheets and statistics packages in the production of reports that include tables and charts.
  2. Explore the application of on-line databases and other internet-based search techniques.
  3. Utilise descriptive and inferential statistics and be able to apply these techniques to the analysis and presentation of data. These will include: summarising and analysing data, probability and statistical distributions, hypothesis testing, forecasting and regression modelling and analysis.
  4. To develop a variety of transferable skills, such as: working on developing one’s dialogical skills, numeracy, I.T skills and writing a report. These skills will be integrated with other modules; specifically, most modules in the programme require students to use data related skills.

Word Count

The overall word count is 1,500.

There will be a penalty of a deduction of 10% of the mark (after internal moderation) for work exceeding the word limit by 10% or more.

The word limit includes quotations and citations but excludes the references list, tables and charts.

How to submit your assessment

The assessment must be submitted by 16:00 (4 pm) on:  9thof May 2023

You are only allowed to submit a file in *.doc or *.docx format (word). Any other file format is not accepted.

  • The submission must be via Moodle of the module Moodle page and the submission needs to create a Turn It-In report. If there is no Turn It-In report, your work will receive a grade of zero.
  • Before the deadline, you can make several submissions to check your similarity index in Turn It-In. This gives you the opportunity to amend your work. However, after the deadline no further submission is possible and the last submission prior to the deadline counts as the final submission.
  • Your coursework will be given a zero mark if you do not submit a copy through Moodle. Please take care to ensure that you have fully submitted your work.
  • Please ensure that you have submitted your work using the correct file format, unreadable files will receive a mark of zero.
  • All work submitted after the submission deadline without a valid and approved reason (see below) will be given a mark of zero.
  • The University wants you to do your best. However, we know that sometimes events happen which mean that you can’t submit your coursework by the deadline – these events should be beyond your control and not easy to predict. If this happens, you can apply for an extension to your deadline for up to two weeks, or if you need longer, you can apply for a deferral, which takes you to the next assessment period (for example, to the resit period following the main Assessment Boards).

Return of Marked Work

You can expect to have marked work returned to you on the 25thof May 2023. If for any reason there is a delay you will be kept informed. Marks and feedback will be provided online. As always, marks will have been internally moderated only, and will therefore be provisional; your mark  will be formally agreed upon later in the year once the external examiner has completed his / her review.
