The nominated cases for MGMT20134 Assessment 1, T1 2023 are:

May Pang & Bruce from week 1 (file name “What’s Right_T1”)

Frances, First Wave Company from week 3 (file name “Decisions Decisions_T1 2023”)

May Pang & Bruce:

You are part of a selection panel for an administrative position in your firm. There are two candidates that have been shortlisted.

The first is May Pang, a young woman with a very good Bachelor’s in business at High Distinction and has two years of previous administration experience – very similar to the position in your office. She has excellent references from previous employers.

The second is Bruce, actually the son of one of your closest friends, who also happens to be the advisor to the Minister for Planning. You did not know he was applying until his father called you and asked you to seriously consider offering his son the job. He also said that if his son was successful, he would be very grateful and “remember” the favour. Bruce also has a Bachelor’s in Business but only at pass level, with several subjects being repeated due to fails. Bruce also has similar work experience to May.

Frances, First Wave Company:

Frances has just joined the contract department of First Wave – a lifestyle company specialising in beachwear and surfing equipment. She was keen to impress her new boss Jim Parsons and her new colleagues with her enthusiasm and commitment to the company. She and her colleagues have been invited to attend a tour of Wuhan Clothing Company – a clothing manufacturer that is bidding for a lucrative First Wave contract to make their new range of summer wear. The tour includes 5 nights of all expenses paid in Macau, staying at the top 6-star casino hotel and $1000 worth of gambling chips, plus a two-day tour of company facilities and presentations on their quality assurance systems. First Wave’s code of conduct does state that when supplier companies are bidding for contracts or tenders, no invitations or hospitality opportunities should be accepted. Frances asked Deidre, Jim’s most trusted long-time employee, whether she should speak to Jim about the invitation given the code. Deidre said, “Absolutely not – this is one of the benefits of the job, and Jim believes that this is an important way for us to understand what these companies can do, their quality standards and opportunities for future production. He sees the extra days and casino as a bonus and a way to reward loyal, hard-working staff.” Frances decided to accept Deidre’s advice and hopefully be seen as a team player.
