This assessment is designed to meet Learning Outcome 1: Outline risk and constraint
management methods that apply in a supply chain context.

Part 1: Risk Management (20 Marks)
The student must only choose ONE for submission.
A) You are to explain the way in which the creation of the “design and landscape” of
the supply chain logistics network aids the retention of inventory following a disruption.

B) You are to explain the methodology used to mitigate effects on inventory from
disruption with reference to a class example. The guidelines are below. Limit to 500-600
words.
Guidelines for option A
Resource for your report will be generated from the PowerPoint slide show, with the
focus being on the following slides and notes pages
Slide 12 – captures all timeline, sector, inventory data and other resource provided by the
base network to facilitate effective inventory outcomes. Note the .. showing the locations
of three fixed (emergency) stocks positioned to provide collateral support for the 4
sectors of the network.
Slide 13 – provides a schedule of the weekly sailings that highlights the three weekly
booked services – defined as scheduled- and the two intermediate non-booked services –
defined as unscheduled -for the initial response to disruption in sectors 1 and 2,
respectively.
Slide 20 + notes – introduces the inventory protocols that present both the criteria used
to define best, most likely and worst-case situations and the process to follow when
dealing with them. In particular, how to tie the best tactics for sector recovery with a
strategy focussed on economic efficiency.
Slide 17 + notes – adds further clarification to the actioning of the protocols in slide 20.

Part 2: Constraint Management (15 Marks)
Fresh Water Ltd is a manufacturer specialising in producing bottled water that supplies
the market in New Zealand. It has a newly appointed supply chain manager who recently
found excessive work-in-progress (WIP) inventory in the warehouse. He wants to know
what contributes to this and would like to reduce the WIP and increase production and
throughput. You are the operations manager of Fresh Water Ltd. The supply chain
manager assigned this job to you. You thoroughly examined the production line and noted
the water bottling had to go through 5 different working processes to produce the
finished goods. The first working station (WS) has a capacity of 1000, the second WS has
a capacity of 1200, and then it comes to the third WS has an 1100 capacity. After going
through the third WS, WIP is passed to the fourth WS with 900 capacity before everything
goes to the final WS with 1500 capacity. Excessive WIP is often found after the third WS
and before the fourth WS.
As the operations manager, you must draw the process map to understand the current
production better. Moreover, you must make decisions based on the Theory of
Constraints and send your report to the supply chain manager. In your report, you must
provide reasoning and proposed actions to resolve the current situation. Limit to 500-
600 words.
