Welcome to Module 1 of Managing Practice and Theory. The first thing to do, if you have not already done so, is to familiarise yourself with the Subject Learning Guide.

In this module, you will explore the management process, the role of managers and how organisational context impacts management practice. You will also explore social cognitive theory and how it is applied, develop nuanced ‘people’ perspectives about the factors likely to predict organisational performance using frameworks relating to employee emotions, attitudes, and stress, and examine and evaluate motivation theories.
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
Topic 1: Contextual management for today’s organisations
■ Identify management challenges in today’s dynamic environment • Examine the impact of contextual differences on management practices • Analyse the key environmental elements influencing management practices
Topic 2: Management process and managerial roles
• Analyse the key function of management process • Evaluate the importance of different managerial roles • Apply the concept of contemporary management theory to foster organisational performance
Topic 3: Behaviour and performance — social cognitive theory
• Describe and apply social cognitive theory to behaviour and performance ■ Evaluate different types of agency • Analyse and apply the processes of observational learning to develop an effective learning plan
Topic 4: Emotion, attitudes and stress
• Identify the differences between emotions and attitudes • Apply the concept of emotional intelligence (El) to develop strategies to enhance performance • Develop an effective workplace stress management plan

• Compare and contrast motivation theories and analyse motivation theories in an organisational context • Apply motivation theory to foster favourable employee outcomes
