Assessment 1 BUSN3001
Assessment type: Presentation Assessment mode: Individual Length: 10 minutes Weighting: 40% Due: 11 pm AEST Sunday Week 3
Assessment details
In Module 1, you have been introduced to strategy, different types of strategies, and the three historical views of strategy. In Module 2, we covered the resource-based view of strategy in-depth, the types of resources, and the VRIO framework’s application to identify strategic asset(s).
Based on the first two modules, this assessment requires you to record an oral presentation (supported by PowerPoint slides) discussing the following points:
• What is strategy, and why is it essential for businesses? • What is the difference between deliberate and emergent strategies? • Should businesses follow deliberate or emergent or both types of strategies? Explain why. • What are the four generic positioning strategies proposed by Michael Porter? Explain the differences between them. • What are resources, capabilities and competencies of an organisation? • How the VRIO framework is used to determine which resource provides a competitive advantage for an organisation?
You can use 1 or more slides for each of the above points (the total presentation should still be completed in 10 minutes). In your presentation, you must include real-life examples and at least 5 academic references (including a reference list on the final slide) presented in Harvard-style format.
Submission process
The presentations should ideally be done in class. You can record the presentation on any platform (e.g., YouTube) and share the link if your local lecturer allows it. Alternatively, you can record and attach your presentation audio and video (face only) on the PowerPoint slides. If the file size is too big to submit through Turnitin, submit the slides without audio and video via Turnitin, and share the slides with audio and video via email, cloud, or some other method. Please note that the task remains incomplete until you have submitted the slides through Turnitin.
Marking criteria Comprehensive of the responses — 10 marks Understanding of theoretical concepts— 10 marks Use of appropriate real-life examples to justify/support viewpoints — 5 marks Quality of written content (e.g., structure, slide content, spelling, grammar, referencing) — 5 marks Quality of oral presentation (e.g., clarity, coherence, fluency, speed, pitch, tone) — 5 marks Referencing — 5 marks
Special consideration (e.g., extensions) You must submit an online application prior to the assessment due date if you need an extension for any assessment task. Such requests cannot be approved via email or verbally.
