Assessment Task 2 – Project
Project
Case study:
Coffee Rome is a well-known coffee brand that operates 21,000 stores across the world. Along with the
coffee stores, the business also has a wholesale company which supplies whole beans and ground coffee.
Business model
Coffee Rome operates under a franchise model. The company is known for its replicated consistency
across the globe. Franchising helps this company to access capital as well as reduces risks that would
tarnish its brand image
Focus and branding
Coffee Rome’s primarily brands itself as a provider of beverages offering a typical coffee house dining
experience. The coffee shops are designed with the customer’s comfort in mind. An inviting décor and
free internet provide an enticing option for people who are looking for a place to meet up with friends,
relax or read. This attracts customers who are willing to pay for quality products and services.
Coffee Rome compared to its competitors, has tight margins. There is no room for inefficiency and waste,
especially in the supply chain.
Global challenges Coffee Rome faces in the supply chain
The company has had exponential growth over the past decade. But, over the last three years, the
company has faced issues related to increases in the cost of coffee beans from the suppliers. The supply
chain has contributed to a great extent to the operational costs.
This is because there is a high degree of risk and uncertainty in their supply chain. The threat of disease,
significant rain, and changing temperatures mean coffee yields can vary substantially from year to year.
The global challenges Coffee Rome faces in the supply chain:
• First and foremost is climate change. Coffee is an agricultural product which falls victim to climate
change impact. Disproportional high-altitude rains, extreme temperatures, and severe hurricanes
have enabled pests and diseases that have directly impacted the coffee farms as well as the coffee
yields.
• Logistics is another global challenge that faces Coffee Rome. The uncertainty especially when
working with numerous suppliers across the world is endless. Rising fuel costs have impacted the
cost of getting products to stores.
• Another challenge that the company faces is the rising prices of coffee beans. This has partly
resulted from increased demand for high-quality coffee beans. Coffee Rome’s margins are affected
by price hikes of coffee beans and a shortage in supply.
Supply chain risks that the Coffee Rome faces
The company identified the following major risks to the coffee supply chain:
• Production risks associated with suppliers (availability of raw product)
• Market risks
o Coffee price volatility
o Steep and prolonged price fall as new competitors is entering the market.

Project Assessment Pack
o Counterpart risk (arising from other businesses inability to meet their financial obligations
when buying wholesale).
o Exchange rate and interest rate volatility
• Enabling environment risks (quality of products)
o Reputational risk
Considering the challenges and the risks that the company faces, management has decided to change its
strategic direction and develop new strategies. They will introduce changes in Coffee Rome’s global
supply-chain management, with a view to reducing costs by developing a sustainable coffee supply chain.
The main factors that need to be focused on to build up a sustainable supply chain network are:
• A centralised system to manage the logistics networks and the supply chain across the continents.
• Digital technologies to be used to ensure that Coffee Rome’s supply chain is efficient and that the
company can cope with the global demand for high-quality coffee.
• Monitor the demand in real-time. Production, distribution and schedules to be modified and
developed in times of need, giving the supply chain added flexibility and allowing Coffee Rome to
address peaks in demand.
• Supply chain management: Use of innovative supply chain and logistics management to reduce
energy consumption and control pollution levels from transportation and production processes.
• Reverse logistics: This relates to the recycling of containers, packaging materials and the use of
environmentally friendly materials
• Corporate social responsibility towards coffee farmers and the environment.
Workplace policies and procedures and legislation and codes of conduct
Policy title: Initiating and leading applied research
Policy scope: Planning, implementing, and reporting on applied research within an organisational
framework to affect strategic governance and procedures.

Document the requirements above by using the template provided below.
THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL TEMPLATE This document has been set up to assist you in preparing the text for your research proposal. It will help you set out the research proposal, in terms of text layout, section headings and sub-sections. The Research Proposal is a complete description of the intended research, developed under the supervision of the assigned supervisor. Through the full proposal, you must demonstrate that the study will contribute to the solution of the problem. The full research proposal must be between 800-1000 words and should include the following: ▪ Title ▪ Brief Introduction ▪ Background and statement of the problem (including a thorough literature review) ▪ Research question or hypothesis, aim and objectives ▪ Study design (the type of study) ▪ Study population and sampling ▪ Data collection methods and instruments ▪ Data analysis methods – if applicable statistical planning must be fully addressed, or the candidate should provide evidence that statistics are not required. ▪ Mechanisms to assure the quality of the study – e.g. control of bias, safe storage of data ▪ Participants in the study – all people involved in the study, and the role they play, should be identified. ▪ Ethical considerations ▪ Resources required for the study, including budget if applicable ▪ References ▪ Appendices (copies of questionnaires, consent forms, etc.) How to use this template: The template provides the sections, headings and subheadings that are required for your proposal. Edit the text where appropriate and insert your text as per your proposal, i.e. type into the document.
