Assessment 1 Case Study Melbourne’s Australia 108 Tower — Leadership challenges -:’eased emphasis on project management systems, construction firms are now seeking professionals with better leadership skills rather than technical skills. A good example of the importance of project leadership is Australia 108. a project that comprises a 319-metre luxury apartment tower featuring 1,105 apartments across 100 levels. Melbourne’s Australia 108 Tower is the Tallest Residential Building in the Southern Hemisphere. It was designed as a sister tower to gold-topped Eureka Tower nearby, with its own golden starburst feature at levels 70 and 71. The Australia 108 is being constructed by Multiplex for leading Singaporean developer World Class Land (Aspial Corporation). This project is currently completed. However, its completion was with many challenges over the past 5 years. Like other projects, the Australia 108 project was with many changes in its planning, scheduling, resourcing etc. that made the project face many risks. In the first half of the project lifecycle. budgeting, resourcing and risk assessment were the main concerns. Some project managers, team members, sponsors and other stakeholders, resisted the changes introduced to the project especially at the second half of the project lifecycle. For example, sustainability issues (e.g. during demolishing, transportation, using natural resources), the governments restrictions on the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of proper coordination among stakeholders in completing the project in 2020 were challenging for the project completion. Some project team members were concerned about the safety and health standards while working on sites. Some others were concerned about their privacy while adopting the COVID-Safety regulations made by the project managers (e.g. they should report their locations and undertaken tasks regularly through monitoring smartphone apps. Some project managers were concerned about inaccurate reports resulting from significant changes in communication style (moving from face-to-face to online and remote interactions). Project managers frequently reported that project team members are still motivated to work toward the team goals to get the project done. Indeed, Multiplex included high motivated, skilled project team members that had a long history of working on sites, who knew each other for a long time. Although the project was in the last phase of its lifecycle. team members’ resistance to changes, ethical concems and groupthink were those issues that jeopardised the success of the project.
