Mental health has been an issue that I have considered, as well as something that I have considered essential to do an in-depth study on. Until today, emotional well-being is still being looked down upon and could still be perceived as a taboo subject, therefore, we should start raising awareness about this concern. I am currently taking psychology as my discipline, and I am dreaming of being one of the many talented mental health counselors in the industry.

At the beginning of this trimester, one of my lecturers discussed how mental abuse is finally getting recognition from the public eye and is now considered a crime in Singapore. I felt taken aback and quite surprised by her statement which led me to start taking an interest in psychological abuse. I realized how this unpleasant behavior is still being tolerated and not acknowledged by the law as a crime in many other countries.

During my brainstorming process, I gathered more knowledge by researching in order to be more familiar with emotional abuse. Here, I was able to start questioning my topic and have yet able to find the possible answers to these questions:

  • Should we let psychological violence slide and not be punishable by law?
  • What is considered or categorized as emotional abuse?
  • Will this problem cause more complications for other stakeholders or be interconnected to other potential factors eventually?
  • Should the legislative branch of the government start a legal action?
