Marking Guide: Possible mark out of 6

Reflection of foundation skills

Critically reflect on your early experience with listening and joining skills. Comment on your experience in using these skills. Do they make a difference to building a positive rapport with the person seeking help? Elaborate on how you might work on improving these skills.

Tips: Demonstrate that you have grasped the concepts of listening and joining and explained their importance to building a positive first impression. Show that you are also able to identify specific tasks for improving your interpersonal skills. Personal reflections are emphasised, and these should be based on experience in active learning sessions or other settings. On-line students may have some difficulty here (given lack of face-to-face interaction with classmates), but you are expected to reflect on how you are developing your skills (e.g through the suggested weekly online activities).

Reflection of content and role of communication

Critically reflect on how you are developing your ability reflect content and paraphrase information accurately and suitably to the person seeking help. Describe how you use these skills in the process of helping the client to identify, articulate and prioritise their main issues. Identify any areas you need to work on through the initial interview stages

(introduction and explanation of the counselling process: defining the presenting issues and exploring the context).

Tips: Demonstate that you have clearly understood the concept and importance of paraphrasing. Personal reflections are emphasised, and these should be based on experience in active learning

sessions or other settings. On-line students may have some difficulty here (given lack of face-to-face interaction with classmates), but you are expected to reflect on how you are developing your ability to conduct a first interview nonetheless.

Reflection of feelings

Critically reflect on the role of empathy in the counselling or therapeutic professional relationship and ways to make sense of feelings and connect these to the person’s experience. You need to differentiate the difference between thoughts and feelings and how you can accurately reflect back feelings to a person explaining their story or situation.

Tips: Demonstrate that you have clearly understood the concept and importance of empathic communication. Personal reflections are emphasised, and these should be based on experience in active learning sessions or other settings. On-line students may have some difficulty here (given lack of face-to-face interaction with classmates), but you are expected to reflect on how you are developing your ability to conduct a first interview nonetheless.

Writing and referencing

Write in the first person. Make sure you read over the journal entries carefully to correct any spelling or grammatical errors. Write in coherent sentences and use paragraphs to move from one discussion point to the next. If you refer to anyone’s work (e.g Course readings) or use specific ideas from someone’s work, make sure you reference these using APA style.

This journal should reinforce the concept of a critical self-reflection on the range of counselling skills for this Course. Make sure you use examples of your own experiences and reflect on these.
