MECH 440- Design and Manufacturing Lab Sec. 01 and 52, Fall 2020 Assignment #1 (CLO 3) Due: Thursday, September 24, 2020
Notes and Instructions: • This is an individual assignment. Students can discuss in a group but at the end, each student must answer the questions independently. • Copying from another student’s work or from elsewhere is strictly forbidden and it will be considered as cheating and will be penalized heavily. • These are open-ended problems with multiple possible solutions. Make your own assumptions as needed but all assumptions must be clearly stated and explained.
Questions:
1. Your client asks you to design a child car seat that can offer better protection for the child passenger in case of a car accident. Describe a plausible “need” that might have triggered that request. Then identify two fundamentally different goals for designs that can satisfy that need, other than designing the child car seat with better protection.
2. Change a problem from one of your Mechanical Engineering classes (e.g., Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Machine Design, etc.) into a design problem. Try changing as few words as possible.
3. Find examples of products that are very different yet solve exactly the same design problem. Different brands of automobiles, bikes, and personal computers are examples. For each, list its features, cost, and perceived quality.
4. For each of devices described below, write a “Problem definition” and design considerations in a similar manner to what is described in lecture slides:
a. A hydraulic jack used for car repair. b. A portable crane to be used in small garages and homes. c. A machine to crush soft drink cans. d. A crane to lift building materials from the ground to the top of a building during construction. e. A machine to insert toothpaste tubes into cartons.
5. Select any one of the devices in Question 4 and generate at least three design concepts. Use sketches, morphology chart and functional synthesis as needed.
6. Use brainstorming to develop at least 10 ideas for:
a. A way to convert human energy to power a boat b. A way to fasten a gear to a shaft and transmit 500 watts of power.
