Assessment 2 expectations, instructions, and helpful hints

This assessment is worth of 35% of the total assessment. Therefore, it is essential that students do well in this task to pass the unit.

The word limit is 2,500 excluding references. However, if your response is within 15% (plus or minus) of the word count, you will not be penalised.

Students must use subheadings to flag each section separately.

All key concepts must be defined clearly. Apply the definitions-assumptions-diagrams-analysis (DADA) framework in your analysis. State the assumptions for the economic models that you use in your response. Diagrams must be clear and labelled correctly. Free-hand diagrams converted to jpeg or other picture files are acceptable. However, photocopied or scanned graphs from books or journals are not acceptable.

Assessment 2 requires conducting a considerable amount of research on the subject. Demonstrate your research effort. For example, in part (b) the brief description of the industry may include (but not limited to) comments on the role of the industry in the economy, main activities, major players and market share, statistics on number of firms (if available). Refer to a wide range of sources such as academic texts, journal articles, reports, websites and news media. There are many websites such as Wikipedia, which may not be credible or worthy of citing in an academic piece.

Students should use CQUniversity library website for their research:

Google Scholar: https://libguides.library.cqu.edu.au/c.php?g=786538&p=5819733

Library search help: https://libguides.library.cqu.edu.au/library-search-help

Databases (including ABS, Gale, OECD, ScienceDirect): http://libguides.library.cqu.edu.au/content.php?pid=607666&sid=5017948

Search for the terms of interest, for example “market structure analysis”

Example of paper on the topic of economic analysis of industry’s market structures. Students should find more recent references.

de Valence, G. (1999). Theoretical issues of industry structure applied to the building and construction industry. Research paper published by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, London.

To understand the effect of pandemic on economics of the country and industry, search for past relevant research. For past epidemics analysis (e.g. SARS) and their effect on various industries such as manufacturing, education, tourism, transport, health, retail, and communication search, for example, the following terms “sars economic effect industry”

Example of data source related to covid-19 in Australia. Other countries have similar data sources.

ABS https://www.abs.gov.au/covid19

The task is not to provide too much descriptive information but to analyse information as much as possible. For example, key features of the market structure (e.g. number of sellers, type of product sold, entry conditions) should be discussed using specific examples from your country. Diagrams explaining solutions should have real life data from your country.

CQUniversity takes plagiarism seriously. Students must use in-text referencing and provide references to all information and your arguments (unless they are your own). Students must provide a list of references. School of Business and Law uses APA referencing style. Details are available from unit Moodle website under the Assessment tab in Assignment 2 folder. Alternatively, the document can be found on CQUniversity’s referencing web site at http://www.cqu.edu.au/referencing (click on American Psychological Association).

How to reference: Word, Endnote https://libguides.library.cqu.edu.au/endnote. If you need more help on how to reference or paraphrase, please seek help from the Academic Learning Centre (https://www.cqu.edu.au/student-life/services-and-facilities/academic-learning-centre) staff on your Campus. Attention should be paid to the quality of references.

The originality of your submitted work will be assessed in the Turnitin system. You must try to keep the Turnitin Similarity Index of your submission below 15%. Students should paraphrase (not copy and paste) and provide their own analysis in order to have a low Turnitin score.

The overall presentation, clarity of expressions and use of graphs have also marks allocated. It is essential that you structure your response in a logical manner.

Extensions requests must strictly adhere to the University and School guidelines with supporting documentation such as medical certificate. All extension requests must be submitted via Moodle’s “Assessment Extension Request’ system (in the Support block).

Students should submit your work well in advance in order to avoid last minute technical problems. Please note that Moodle will automatically submit the draft on a due date. No submissions (including automatically submitted by Moodle will be reverted to the draft after the due date). Make sure that you upload the latest copy of your assignment. After the due date you have to click “submit” button in order for your assignment to be marked.

Please do not hesitate to post your queries on Q&A Moodle forum or contact me for further clarifications.

I wish you the best with your submission!
