During my placement l collaborated with women asylum seekers who are originally from Congo Many of the women I worked with experienced unspeakable things due to the war in Congo. For example, most asylum seekers in the group did not understand or speak English fluently. Therefore, I used ICT technologies such as Google Translate to improve communication, which consequently allowed the organization to offer customized services that meet the needs of different people of different nationalities.
The fact that the women asylum seekers came from diverse backgrounds posed challenges such as language barriers and other diversity issues that hamper service delivery. During my practice placement, I encouraged the women to enrol in college and learn English to improve communication (SWE, 2020). In addition to improving communication, social constructivism theory argues that the surrounding cultural contexts influence individuals’ cognitive development (Burr, 20144).
Social construction theory advocates inclusivity and multiculturalism. Indeed, shared meaning and constructed knowledge significantly shape individuals, groups, and communities (Burr, 20144). These educations are a way to establish support and interventions that are consistent with the cultural needs and perspectives of affected individuals, populations, and communities.
