Supplemental Reading Assignment – U.S. History
For this class, you are required to write a book review of a non-fiction/fiction book dealing with U.S.History or ethnic studies. Any book that includes culture, art, religion or history is acceptable. I recommend that you read about something American that you are interested in that you may not know much about. For example: a novel, biography, or nonfiction book about something historical or cultural. Your book should have at least 100 pages, and be accepted by your teacher. Since this class is U.S. History, try to choose a book that can teach something pertaining to culture in America. Our library has many fantastic books that will teach you a great deal and be most interesting.
Your book review will be due on
Friday, February 24th.
Your book review must be 2-3 pages typed (1.5-spaced, 12 point font, one-inch margins).
You will submit your book review using the turnitin.com link I will give you in the future.
I expect your book review to be free of grammatical and spelling errors, and otherwise well edited.
Your book review must have the following components:
1) Introduction (two or three paragraphs)
– Bibliographic information (author, title, date of publication, publisher, number of pages, type of book)
– Describe what the book is about.
– Use evidence from the book to support your responses.
2) Connection to class subject (two to three paragraphs)
– Describe how the events in the book connect to U.S. History or Ethnic Studies.
– Does the author write about political, social, cultural, artistic, or economic events or elements?
– Describe what you learn about culture. Did you learn about something in America that you didn’t know much about?
-Compare what you learned about culture or life to that of your own experience and why you find it interesting or meaningful.
– Use evidence from the book to support your responses and cite the page numbers from the book.
3) Evaluation and conclusion (two to three paragraphs)
– Give your opinion about the book. Did you enjoy the book and why?
-What did you find to be particularly meaningful in the book and why?
– What are the book’s greatest strengths and weaknesses?
-What part/subject of the book would you like to learn more about?
