How should I prepare for this exam?

You will apply the topics discussed using briefing notes that will be made available to you in Week 2. Time will allowed each week for you to work on your plan.

Construct your plan using the brief notes. Remember that you are creating a marketing plan not a business plan. You will need to understand the difference between these two plans.

What will I be required to do in this exam?

You will submit your exam using the WISEflow system. The Exams team will contact you directly with instructions.

Submit a marketing plan in response to the briefing notes provided. You will prepare your main plan throughout the semester (75%) but you will be given an additional task on the day that relates to the plan that you have written (25%).

What do I need to do to pass this exam? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)

Using referenced found data, carry out a relevant contextual analysis

Submit a marketing plan that demonstrates understanding of the marketing planning process

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?

A high quality submission will demonstrate good understanding of the task, contain a clearly identified target market and propose a marketing plan that clearly meets the needs of the market identified.

Students who have achieved good grades previously have taken advantage of the weekly opportunities to work on the plan, ask questions of the tutor and provided a plan that is coherent throughout.

How does this examination relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?

Every scheduled session from Week 2 focuses on an element of the plan.

How will my examination be marked?

Marking will be via WISEflow. A holistic view of your marketing plan by considering the following:

Third – 40-49%

Lower 2nd – 50-59%

Upper 2nd – 60-69%

First class – 70% and above

Description of the gap in the market

An attempt is made but the concept of a gap is not really understood

An attempt is provided, but the gap is poorly identified

A reasonable attempt, the understanding of a gap is demonstrated but the recommended gap is not entirely clear or workable

A strong attempt with a clear gap supported by referenced market data

Segmentation of the market place

Some segmentation discussion but understanding of the segmentation approaches is barely demonstrated

Standard segmentation approach but the question is not answered

Good understanding of the application of segmentation is demonstrated

The response demonstrates excellent understanding of how segmentation theory might be applied to the marketplace

Target market

The concept of target market identification is only lightly understood

A sensible target market is provided, but discussions have missed some key elements

A clear target market is provided, but some elements needed to support the marketing mix have been missed

A clear, well-defined target market is provided including all the elements needed to support marketing mix recommendations. The identification draws on theory to support discussions

Marketing mix discussions

The marketing mix is discussed, but proposals are random and lack coherence

The marketing mix recommendations are provided but discussions lack purpose in relation to the target market

Marketing mix proposals are linked to the target market but lack practicality

Marketing mix proposals are strongly linked to the target market, sensible and practical, with a strong academic underpinning

Additional task

The additional task is discussed but demonstrates only limited understanding of the challenges involved

The response to the additional task is sensible but the reader is not convinced that all challenges are understood

A standard response to the additional task is provided

The additional task recommendations demonstrate full understanding of the challenges involved

These elements are not equally weighted.

How will I receive feedback on my exam?

Feedback will be available on WISEflow. Feedback is usually released a few days after the grade is provided to SITS.
